Kim, I agree with you. Elephants, as sentient beings, should ideally live in environments that allow them to exhibit natural behaviors, free from exploitation.

However, given the complexities involved in human-elephant interactions, particularly in contexts where complete non-interference is challenging, sanctuaries represent the best compromise for elephants that cannot be returned to the wild. They certainly provide a more natural and less intrusive environment compared to zoos or circuses.

I agree with you. Plus, it's not always just about an individual elephant. Even if an individual elephant in captivity is being treated well, we have to think about what that teaches and reinforces about animals and elephants more generally to the public: that they are commodities, objects, and ours to use. That's exactly the baseline assumption I hope we move away from in the future.
