I would love to read this book and simultaneously I’m terrified of reading it. Having been vegan now for 14 years, just the few sentences about the rattle snake festival makes my stomach churn. But I truly hope that many non-vegans will read this book and re-evaluate their relationship with animals.

I completely understand - it was stomach-churning to watch in real life, too! But I do think it's important to face the worst of what we do to animals. You can always read the book and skip that chapter ;)

I understand how you feel about the trepidation of reading books about animal cruelty and exploitation. While we need to take care of ourselves, as learning about what we do to animals is distressing, we owe it to them to be as informed as possible to be effective advocates for them. Thank you!

REVIEW: ''Forget the Camel: The Madcap World of Animal Festivals and What They Say About Being Human''

This book left me reflecting on my own advocacy and how traditions, no matter how ingrained, should never be beyond question. It’s a reminder that just because something has been done for centuries doesn’t mean it should continue unchallenged. Forget the Camel is a must-read for animal lovers, cultural explorers, and anyone willing to examine the strange, contradictory ways we humans define ourselves through the creatures we claim to love.
